Android's Early Days: A Look Back at the First Releases of the Operating System

The world of Android has come a long way since its inception in 2003 by Android, Inc. After being acquired by Google in 2005, the operating system underwent significant development before its public release. Before the official release of Android 1.0, several internal builds were tagged with code names like 'Astro Boy' and 'Bender'. However, these names never made it to the actual code name for the 1.0 and 1.1 releases. Instead, Android 1.0 and 1.1 were released without a specific code name.

The first public release of Android 1.0 took place in October 2008 with the launch of the T-Mobile G1 (also known as HTC Dream). This marked the beginning of a new era for mobile operating systems, as both the operating system itself and its SDK were released along with their source code under the Apache License.

To test the operating system, developers had to rely on software emulation, as physical devices did not exist at that time. The Android team released several public beta versions of the SDK, starting from November 5, 2007. The final SDK release followed on November 12, 2007. Interestingly, there were at least two internal releases of the software within Google and the Open Handset Alliance (OHA) before the beta version was made available.
